Behavioral Simulation Techniques for Substrate Noise Analysis in PLL Circuits

چکیده
This paper presents a methodology to simulate, at the system level, the substrate noise coupling to phase locked loop (PLL) circuits in mixed signal systems. Macro-modeling for digital noise injection and propagation through the substrate are considered. Behavioral models of the PLL for noise sensing as well as intrinsic functionality are abstracted from transistor level circuit analysis results. An impulse sensitivity function (ISF) technique is proposed to characterize the substrate noise effects on the phase perturbation of the voltage controlled oscillator (VCO). Verification uses time-domain analysis with a simulator and abstracted behavioral models, all implemented in the C++ language. Compared to the traditional circuit level simulation method, this approach provides several orders-ofmagnitude improvement in speed with acceptable accuracy in terms of phase noise spectra.

The mixed-signal circuits with both analog and digital blocks on a single chip have wide applications in communication and RF circuits. Integrating these two blocks can cause serious problems especially in applications requiring fast digital circuits and high performance analog blocks. Fast switching in digital blocks generates a noise which can be introduced to analog circuits by the common su...

During the past few years, a lot of work has been done on behavioral models and simulation tools. But a need for modeling strategy still remains. The VHDL-AMS language supports the description of analog electronic circuits using Ordinary Differential Algebraic Equations (ODAEs), in addition to its support for describing discrete-event systems. For VHDL-AMS to be useful to the analog design ...

Conventional PLL design techniques used to implement CMOS GHz range clock recovery circuits typically suffer from significant power supply coupled noise in large integrated systems. This noise worsens the jitter of the PLL and degrades the system Bit-ErrorRate (BER). This paper describes an analog approach which applies fully differential current steering technique throughout the whole PLL sy...
